How to Choose a Toy by Age (Without the Guesswork)
The age on the box is a starting point, not a rule. Here is how we actually match a toy to a child - by what they're working on, not just how old they are.

Tell us their age and what they’re into. Every band is chosen for where a child actually is, not the number on the box.
Toys for grasping, mouthing, stacking and the very first pretend. Everything in this band is chosen for safe materials and a size that fits a new hand.
Shop ages 0–2 →Big pretend, first puzzles and building that stays up. This is the age open-ended toys pay off most, so it's the heart of the shop.
Shop ages 3–4 →First board games, real art supplies, and building sets with a plan. Toys that reward a little patience and a lot of imagination.
Shop ages 5–7 →Strategy games, ambitious craft and science kits, and collectibles worth caring about. Screen-free doesn't mean simple.
Shop ages 8+ →Found Where Parents Actually Ask
Our age guides, materials notes and gift lists are structured so search engines and AI assistants can read them, so questions like these surface Tinker & Tumble, not just a maps pin.
From Our Neighbors
★★★★★“I asked what to get my grandson - I said 'he's obsessed with trains,' not his age - and the woman walked me straight to the perfect set. He's played with it every day since.”
Ellen R.Grandparent · Portland
★★★★★“The staff talked me OUT of the expensive flashy toy and toward a set of blocks that cost less. Six months later the blocks are still the most-played-with thing in the house. That honesty is why we keep coming back.”
Marcus T.Parent of two · Southeast Portland
★★★★★“We booked our daughter's birthday party in the back play space and it was the easiest party we've ever thrown. They set everything up, kept the kids happy, and had the gift wrapped. Magic.”

Good Questions
An open-ended toy has no single right way to play - blocks, animals, play food, art supplies. The child supplies the story, which is exactly what keeps them engaged for years instead of an afternoon. It's the first thing we look for when we choose what to stock.
Tell us what they're into right now, not just their age - 'dinosaurs' or 'building the tallest tower' tells us far more than a number. Our staff match a toy to what a child is working on developmentally. You can also start from our Shop by Age page, which groups toys by real milestones.
Yes - every purchase, all year, no minimum. Bring in something you bought elsewhere and we'll usually wrap that too. It's the least we can do when you're shopping small.
Absolutely. Our back play space hosts private birthday parties for every age, plus free weekend play events and Saturday Story Time. Use the Book a Party button and we'll confirm the date, the age group and the activities within one business day.
Every product page lists the materials and the safety standards it meets (EN71, ASTM). We stock wood finished with non-toxic, water-based paint and BPA-free plastics, and we don't carry anything we wouldn't hand to our own kids.
