The Screen-Free Gift Guide That Actually Gets Played With

Every December someone asks us for 'the gift that won't end up ignored by New Year's.' It's a fair thing to want. Here's the honest shortlist - the toys our own staff buy for their own nieces, nephews and kids, chosen for staying power rather than shelf appeal.

For the under-twos, it's almost always a ring stacker or a set of nesting cups. They hit the exact developmental sweet spot of the age - grab, stack, knock down, repeat - and they survive being chewed, dropped and loved. Add a soft first friend for the crib and you've covered a first birthday completely.

For preschoolers, buy the blocks. A good sixty-piece set is the single most-played-with toy we sell, because it becomes whatever the day's game requires and it plays beautifully with every other toy the child already owns. Pair it with a small set of animals or peg people and you've handed a three-year-old an entire world.

For the five-to-seven crowd, a cooperative board game is the quiet winner - the whole table plays together and nobody flips it over when they lose, because everyone wins or loses as a team. And for big kids, a craft or science kit with a genuine result: a candle they can actually pour, a circuit that actually lights, a model that actually flies.

One piece of wrapping-desk wisdom to close on: the best gift is one notch simpler than you think it should be. The impressive-looking toy gets the 'wow' at the party; the slightly plainer one gets played with in February. We'll happily help you find either - and we gift-wrap both for free.
